PHOENIX, AZ summer 2023- In an unexpected turn of events, Coach Starkweather made a bold commitment that has sent ripples through the team's ranks. During a lunch gathering at the Cake Factory during the 2023 National trip, Chris Chen a Lincoln Doulges debater of the Penn Debate Team, posed a very deep and important question . When asked about the level of commitment required to secure victory at the State tournament this year, Coach Starkweather, the head of the Penn Speech Debate Team, responded with unwavering determination. To quote his exact words, Starkweather declared, "I will shave my head—yes, you heard me right. I will allow you, the team, to shave my head if we secure the State trophy." This announcement was met with surprise and curiosity, prompting Coach Starkweather to provide additional details. He clarified that the head-shaving spectacle would be held during the Penn Speech and Debate end-of-year banquet, creating an unforgettable moment of celebration if the team emerges victorious. Under the terms of this extraordinary pledge, should the Penn Debate Team clinch the coveted State trophy, each member of the team will have the unique opportunity to participate in shaving a portion of Mr. Starkweather's hair during the banquet. This commitment has ignited a renewed sense of determination among the team members, who are now more motivated than ever to excel in their pursuit of the state championship. Notably, this entire conversation was recorded, ensuring that the promise made by Coach Starkweather will be documented for all to witness.
